2020 Jeep Gladiator
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator marks the return of the automaker to the truck-class with its own unique take on the pickup truck. From the front, the Gladiator looks like the Wrangler until the rear seat backs where a 5-foot steel bed extends out to hold cargo. Here's everything you need to know about the Jeep Gladiator.
Trim Levels (Exterior)
The 2020 Gladiator comes in three trim levels starting with the base Sport followed by the Overland, and Rubicon. A black cloth top comes standard and there's an optional composite top that can match the body color or in black.
Like other Jeep models, the doors, windshield, and top are removable, which sets the vehicle apart from other trucks on the market. In terms of styling details, Gladiator shares the same details as the Wrangler with round headlights, a seven-slot grille, meaty tires, and paintable fender flairs. There's also an option for a spray-in bed liner and a roll-top cover.
Engine (Power)
Jeep keeps engine options simple with this model. Each Gladiator comes with a 3.6-liter V-6 engine that produces 285 horsepower. A six-speed manual transmission is standard but you can also opt for an eight-speed automatic transmission. By the end of 2020, Jeep is expected to introduce a 3-liter turbo diesel V6 engine that produces 220 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque mated to the eight-speed transmission. With this combination, it will tow 7,600 pounds. Other combinations only tow around 4,000 pounds.
Performance
The Jeep Gladiator has a cargo bed for hauling but it still handles going off-road like any other Jeep in the lineup. It performs very well with the optional eight-speed automatic transmission. It accelerates and moves through the eight cogs with ease. The six-speed manual has a light clutch and long throws. Combined with the power of the V-6 engine means shifting more often.
Because it has a longer frame by two feet, Gladiator reacts more to bumps and rolling over freeway expansion joints compared to other types of trucks. Dana 44 solid axles are on the front and rear of the truck across all trim levels and the coil springs articulate very well. Overall the Gladiator is light and handles nicely.
Interior
The Jeep Gladiator has decent legroom for the front passengers and lacks a power seat for the driver. Compared to the Wrangler, back seat passengers do have more legroom. Base Sport models have air conditioning and a 5-inch radio as standard features. Others such as power windows and doors, an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and a hard top are options. The higher trims have leather upholstery and heated seats. The Rubicon also includes features for off-roading as well.
Safety Features
The 2020 Jeep Gladiator comes with four air bags. Other safety options come in two packages. The first adds LED taillights, blind-spot monitors, and rear parking sensors. This package must be included to get the second options package which adds automatic emergency paired with adaptive cruise control. Rubicon adds forward-collision warning as an option.
