Deli in Greenwood INYou can’t beat a sandwich from a good deli. It’s the perfect place to get a quick but delicious meal when you are on the go. Indianapolis is home to many excellent delis that serve up roast beef sandwiches, corned beef on rye, or smoked turkey. Here is a list of some of the best delis around the city to help you find the one you want for your next lunch or dinner.

Shapiro’s Delicatessen

Shapiro’s is an Indianapolis staple and has served up delicious meats and sandwiches since 1905. It features a cafeteria-style line where you can see food options and desserts. You just move on down the line and tell the servers what you want. Some of the local favorites include the Reuben sandwich, which comes with a homemade pickle and a cup of matzah ball soup, and the macaroni and cheese, which has a nice crunchy crust on top. Make sure to save room for dessert if you go to Shapiro’s. You can choose from cannoli, a cream horn, lemon cake, and much more.

McAlister’s Deli

McAlister’s on North Meridian St has soup, sandwiches, and their signature spuds. These are huge potatoes stuffed with an assortment of ingredients. The grilled chicken spud has grilled chicken, cheese, scallions, and tomatoes, and the spud Ole has all your favorite southwestern flavors. You can get a delicious club sandwich at McAlister’s including the orange cranberry club or the club wrap, and there are tons of soups to try. The broccoli cheddar is cheesy and delicious, and the fire roasted vegetable is light and healthy. Make sure to get a sweet tea to go with your meal, and keep in mind it gets very busy at lunchtime so plan ahead.

Ripple Bagel & Deli

Stop by Ripple Bagel & Deli for fresh bagels steamed to order and then made into your favorite sandwich. Choose from about a dozen different bagel varieties and a broad range of sandwich fillings. The Riviera Reuben is fantastic, and Ned’s Gold is also a good choice. This comes with turkey, Swiss cheese, banana peppers, lettuce, horseradish, and Parmesan peppercorn on a garlic bagel. There are soups if you want something light, and freshly cut salads if you’re feeling healthy.

Fat Dan’s Deli

Fat Dan’s Deli has a little of everything from an Italian beef sandwich to wings and French fries. This is the place to go for a burger in Indy, and the brisket is also a favorite with the locals. If you get the Italian beef, make sure to get it with the hot peppers; you won’t be disappointed. This Chicago-style deli also serves up Vienna sausage dogs, in-house smoked ribs, and fresh deli sandwiches. You can find Fat Dan’s either on North College Ave in BroadRipple or at the Mass Ave location at 410 E. Michigan St.

Give one of these Indianapolis delis a try for your next lunch. Each one has a specialty to try and everything you want to go with it.
