Man Fishing on BoatLocated just to the south of the major metropolis of Indianapolis, the small city of Greenwood, IN is an excellent place for some fishing. For those looking for fishing spots outside of the hustle and bustle of the big city ponds, there are some great places to start, while there are many more wonderful spots just a short drive away.

1. Sodalis Nature Park

Located a short 30-minute drive from the center of town is Sodalis Nature Park. Created to protect the endangered Indiana Bat the park is also home to a wide variety of Indiana wildlife, including groundhogs, deer, and squirrels.
The park boasts 210 acres of tranquil woodland including a 5.5-acre fishing pond, made all the more peaceful as no motorized vehicles are allowed in the park. The pond is a good place to fish for Catfish, Perch, Bream, and more.

2. Monroe Lake

A little further afield is Monroe Lake, Indiana’s largest land-bound body of water, at over 10,750 surface acres! Due to its size, the lake is an excellent place for boat fishing, or simply from the shore, in the shade of the many trees surrounding the lake. Boats are available to rent from the lake office.
The lake is a wonderful place to fish for bluegill, bass, and crappie, but do be aware you will need a license, which can be easily bought online from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources Website.

3. Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area

Another short 30-minute drive, to the south of the city, is Atterbury Fish and Wildlife Area. At nearly 5000 acres, the site includes nearly 270 acres of fishable waters, including the 75 acre Pisgah lake, which is open to fish all year round, and features a concrete boat ramp, although, as with all the lakes, boats are limited to a 24-volt electric motor.
The lake is an excellent place to find redear, bluegill, channel catfish, and the largemouth bass, which has a minimum size limit of 14 inches. Unfortunately, no camping or swimming is allowed in the park, but it also provides an excellent place for hiking and hunting.

4. Morgan-Monroe State forest

Morgan-Monroe State Forest is located a little under an hour from the city, and is a large area of reclaimed, forested farmland, with three small lakes: Bryant Creek Lake, Cherry Lake, and Prather lake, all of which are open to fishing all year round.
Boats with electric motors are allowed on the lakes, but swimming is not permitted. You have a good chance of catching northern pike, largemouth bass, catfish, and muskie in them. There are several primitive campsites in the park, and a valid fishing permit is again required.
There are many lovely, secluded places to fish in the south-central Indiana area, all of which are only a very short drive from the city. They offer limitless opportunities for a relaxing weekend or days away amongst tranquil trees and scenery. For more information about the local area, visit Tom O’Brien CDJR today!
